                The Teacher
Changing Lives

It is the responsibility of adults to adapt their style rather than expecting children to respond to the adult’s perspective.

What makes a good teacher? The single most notable discovery is the extraordinarily consistent pattern in the description of a good teacher or more succinctly a good and memorable teacher. There are three characteristics that were described time and again--to an astonishing degree:

1. Competence in the subject matter.
2. Caring deeply about students and their success.
3. Character, distinctive character.

These attributes were evident regardless of the level of education or the subject matter being taught.
Competency is being handled with all types of curriculum training almost to the point of absurdity, but caring and character are being almost completely ignored. Caring deeply about each student and about that student's accomplishment and growth is of paramount importance. It begins with the teacher recognizing the student as an individual who brings particular experiences, interests, enthusiasms, and fears to the classroom. It is the teachers compassion in taking time to acknowledge a student's life outside the classroom, inquiring about the family's welfare or the student's participation in an extracurricular activity that make the connection. It moves to an insistence that the students take pride in his or her work--stretching each person to a level of performance that surprise and engage the students. The ability of the teacher to not keep score and to start each day anew and with hope has lasting positive effect. Interpersonal relationships are paramount.
Personality profiles are one of the methods used for better communication. A profile is completed to develop a description of an individual's distinct personality traits (both teachers and students). Your personality will influence relationships with your family, friends, peers, students and classmates and contribute to your health and well being. Teachers can administer personality profiles in class to help children discover their strengths and developmental needs. They get a better understanding of themselves and those around them. The driving force behind administering a personality profile is to open up lines of communication and bring students and teachers together to have a higher appreciation for one another. This is one of many methods that can provide guidance to teachers of what teaching strategies will be the most effective for their students.
Personality profiles can benefit you by:

  • Increasing productivity
  • Get along better
  • Help students realize their full potential
  • Identify teaching strategies for students
  • Help all better understand and appreciate other personality types
Personality profiles ask a series of questions to rate your likes and dislikes using a set of questions and tasks.  The profile will then describe your personality type. A personality profile is not a means to type cast anyone, but it allows us to understand the personality attributes associated with the various individuals you interact with. These allow us to recognize our strong attributes and keep in mind our not so strong attributes.
